Enzymatic hydrolysis, an essential step to produce bioethanol

Marcela Pino was interviewed by national news – 2018.

Our main objective is to study the mechanisms by which this enzyme can be inhibited, since there are different compounds that can inhibit it, among them is lignin, which is one of the main components of lignocellulosic material.

It is a Basic Science-Conacyt project and consists of the study of inhibition of the cellulase enzyme on hydrothermally pretreated agave bagasse, which seeks to take advantage of this agave bagasse generated by the tequila plants. First, a hydrothermal treatment is carried out where the agave bagasse is subjected to high pressures and temperatures in an aqueous medium, in order to solubilize the hemicellulose and obtain a solid rich in cellulose and lignin for the enzymatic hydrolysis stage. Already in enzymatic hydrolysis, it is sought to depolymerize cellulose into glucose monomers with the action of the enzyme cellulase.
